It's Trailer Time! Episode 2

Hey everybody. It's trailer time again and we've got a bunch of new stuff out there:

So this week we've got:

I have to admit I never really had any big interest in Pearl Jam but this trailer looks pretty interesting. It's something I would check out in a cinema with superb sound or on Blu-Ray when they releasing it.

The Enemy Within

Brazilian Action Cinema at it's finest. I'm always curious about non-US movies with a promising look and quality in story and productions value. Lets see if the movie is as good as it's trailer.

Kill List

Britain's got Talent? I hope to check this one out asap.!

George Clooney & Ryan Gosling in a promising movie

The Ides of March

Hollywood is bringing us a movie with the main cast being George Clooney and indiefilm Ryan Gosling. The trailer looks very promising to be a good movie. I'm really curious about this one especially since we've been trashed with those mediocre economical awarness movies like The International and Wall Street 2 and so on. This one is more about politics than econimical stuff. Check out the trailer and more information down below.

This movie will open on October 7th in the US and is Cowritten by George Clooney and Grant Heslov. Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Evan Rachel Wood and Marisa Tomei co-star, and the film looks pretty damn solid from here.

This is the films synopsis:

Stephen is a wunderkind press secretary who has built a career that men twice his age would envy. During a tight presidential primary race, however, Stephen’s meteoric rise falls prey to the backroom politics of more seasoned operatives, and his one night stand with a teenage staffer proves to be more complicated than casual. Farragut North is a classic tale of hubris set against a contemporary landscape – about the lust for power and the costs one will endure to achieve it.

10 movie franchises that have to die!

Everybody knows that Hollywood produces a lot of squels now instead of making cool new originals. We'll unfortunately some of those big shots in the studios don't understand some of these movie franchises have to go. And they have to go now!

I'm not saying all franchises are bad but we do have quite a lot that are just not worthy of being shown in a cinema anymore. I would mention twilight but the end is already scheduled anyways and I've heard there is people that actually like it.

10.  Madagascar
Everybody loved the penguins in the first movie. We all loved the little lemurs as well and we had a funny story going on. The second movie unfortunatley lost sight of everything that made the first movie funny. So now there is going to be a Madagascar 3 released on June 8th, won't be pretty.

9.Ice Age
Yet another movie that has a funnier supporting cast than the original characters. The only funny thing about Ice Age that is left is Scrat the squirrel. Please, stop making new Ice Ages Sequels!

8.Indiana Jones
We loved you Indy and thank you so much for three wonderful movies Mr. Spielberg. But in times of an overflow of 3D animation and special effects the 4th movie just sucked. For me it was not bad enough to destroy my beloved memories of the first three movies. Personally I just deny that there is a fourth Indiana Jones and I'm good. Rumor has it that the triumvirate Spielberg, Lucas and Ford are thinking about doing a fifth movie with Harrisson Ford pushing 70!

7.Jurassic Park

The next screenwriter has been hired to write a fourth JP.
The third movie was plain awful. The second one had some surprising moments with classic Spielberg filmmaking in it. But neither of the sequels had the majesty of the first one brining you in a new world where Dinosaurs actually could exsists. All of this mixed in a pretty cool story and amazing special effects for that time. Let this one go as well Mr. Spielberg, please!

6. Scary Movie

Scary movie 5 release date: April 20th, 2012
Indeed very scary to see how bad a comedy can turn out if you make more than one out of it. We had a great start. Scary movie 1 and the audience had a great relationship. But soon we had other movies trying to do the same concept and scary movie 2...and 3....and 4....and now there is number 5 and about 20 other similar movies like Meet the spartans etc. Please stop agonizing us with your movies.

5. American Pie
Basically the same story here. We had a great first movie. It was new, funny, charming and we have the now even more famous american apple pie all around the world with our funny character Jim and his Willy in it. I can't even see how Sean William Scott and Allyson Hanningan could go on with this madness. The American Pie franchise is way below their league. This plot is deeeead.
American Reunion scheduled April 6th, 2012

4. Pirates of the Carribean
Personally I didn't even like the first one but I can see how this is something a lot of people like. The first movie had a story we haven't really seen before with Johnny Depp in a role which we haven't seen from him. He plays the part with excellence in every movie. But it is getting OLD! None of the sequels managed to get the magic from the first one. Once more it's "the more 3D and special effects the better". Unfortunately the 4th movie has made more than 1$ Billion worldwide. There is certainly going to be a next one.

3. Spy Kids
Alright kids enjoyed it but all I can say is: Please go away Spy Kids...just rest in peace, please. I want to remind you that this is a Robert Rodriguez franchise, the master of in filmmaking. What happened man?
Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D – August 19, 2011

2. Final Destionation

We all know Horror is a genre that can produce as many sequels as it wants without being punished for it. First time around Final Destionation was a great one time hit. Like Freddy, Jason, no matter what we do, I think Hollywood is just going to give us more goosebumps but not because of the shocking sequels. It's because of those horrible movies.

Dark Passenger is back!

It's been 7 months since we've last seen Dexter Morgan our favourite killer and father. ComiCon2011 gave us the new Promo Trailer for Season 6.

It's a fast edit and it makes my heart beat faster! Can't wait for October 9th. This season we have a guest starring by Tom Hanks son Colin Hanks! Let's see how that turns out. Looks like he is the bad guy this season. Or is it Dexter himself? I'm psyched!

It's Trailer Time! Episode 1

Hey guys, so I try to make a "new trailer" section every week from now on. I'll only upload the ones that I think are worth looking at. Either because they're good (let's hope that's most of them) or because they're incredibly bad... we'll see!

The Dream house kinda looks like a mix between The Shining and A history of violence. I still think it could be kind of interesting. Like you saw in my post yesterday, nothing is really original anymore. We'll see how that anmnesia thing turns out...

Final Destination 5 is just another FD....nothing new here just another competitor in the section "weirdest way to die"...

Detective Dee seems to be a quite funny and action packed martial arts movie. It's not going to be deep but it's not supposed to be looks. Looks like a very funny "let's go to the movies" kind of film. Looking forward to see that!

Do you ever think "I've seen this before", even though you haven't?

Well, story is the most important part of a movie. Sure the tech stuff can be quite interesting but in the end 3D and VFX are not what makes us go out of a movie and say "wow, I connected with this story on a personal level". More one the storycrisis of hollywood here.
A young man named Kirby Ferguson created a series called Everything is a remix which is very successful in the internet and it won a bunch of prizes. It was about 10 months ago that he came up with the first part and he just released the third of his videos you can watch here.

So Everything really is a remix and we won't really find new original material I suppose. But we should be making use of that possibility to soak up ideas by other filmmakers and combine them to a new movie instead of doing another kind of copy & paste movies. There is actually not a whole lot more I can say after watching these three videos.
All I know is I'm looking forward to number 4. Thanks Kirby for sharing your thoughts with us!

Why the Dark Knight Rises Teaser is great!

The Dark Knight Rises and Christpoher Nolan is ending a epic trilogy that changed the way we look at superhero movies. Instead of making them unbeatable, handsome and always acting with a high moral code, he made a Bruce Wayne what could actually be a real person. He's got flaws and follows his instincts instead of a moral code that big studios would force on him if it wasn't for Christoper Nolan. Batman has a dark soul with a tragic past and faces rejection everywhere he goes. Even though he's rescued Gotham City several times the people of the city want to get rid of him.
I expected a lot from the trailer and they did a darn good job. It's not a whole lot to look at but it's good enough to reassure that Nolan and his team are doing a great job and it makes it harder for me to wait for July 2012.

Everybody who watched the Batman & Robin movie from 1997 probably remembered this:

So the first of all Nolan had to erase our memory of this awful character we remember. He changed the appearance of Bane a little bit to introduce us to a completely "new" villain. We know Tom Hardy already from Nolan's movie Inception and he now is playing Bane in the new Batman movie.

We don't have the problem that Bane is a villain with the character of the Riddler or Joker because he is not a sneaky "I have a surprise for you" kind of enemy. He's a bigger physical threat to Batman than the other villains. As of now we don't know how Catwoman will interact in this new movie and we don't know the plans of the villain but we can say one thing for sure. The Dark Knight Rises will end a series that was a game changer to superhero comic movies.

Enjoy the official trailer:

Thoughts about the story crisis in Hollywood

I saw this Trailer for Contagion a couple of days ago and the cast list and Steven Soderbergh made it quite interesting at first sight. The editor Stephen Mirrione is also quite famous as he was nominated for best editor at the Academy Awards in 2000 for Traffic and in 2006 for Babel. He's got a list of amazing and to me very influential movies like 21 Grams (2003), Biutiful (2010) and the Ocean's 11/12/13 series with George Clooney. He's got a very unique style of quick jump cuts and it almost reminds you of a Jean-Luc Godard Film.
Now the problem is, that Contagion doesn't have an original story. It's a mix between Outbreak which might have been a good movie back when it came out, and 28 days later which I enjoyed but it's a different genre. The approach to get people into the movie theaters nowadays seems to be quite simple. Either you get a great cast and team to do the movie or you do it like James Cameron and just push the technical limits and create amazing special effects. Now don't get me wrong I loved Avatar for what it's done with 3D Animation and stereoscopic cinema. It really brought movies to another level of realism. But the story crisis in Hollywood is getting more serious with each remake, sequel or remix they're putting out there. I'm not saying 28 days later or Outbreak were the first movies of their kind but it was still somewhat of a new approach to tell a story.

I haven't seen Contagion yet obviously and I will have to before making any more statements about it but watching this trailer made me think of so many other bad movies over the last years. James Cameron himself admitted that there is a crisis even though his film Avatar has almost the exact same story as Pocahontas. You can read the article with James Cameron here. But what he is basically saying is that movies like Battleship, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Tron:Legacy are not carrying and storyline at all. Just because there are a lot of special effects and events happening after another it doesn't mean that there is a story. The characters of those movies are just an outline of they should be. Rebellious boy, Hero saving the world...but it feels like there is no thought about who they really are except your teenage guy/girl with their normal problems while saving the world.
We all love our summer no brain blockbusters but the movies that really move us aren't about special effects they are about story. I was lucky enough to get to listened to a John Lasseter (one of the co-founders of Pixar) presentation this friday in the Apple Store Munich, Germany and he was talking about the opportunity to make every movie perfect and how to achieve that goal during the whole time of production. I'm not a huge fan of Pixar but I enjoyed Ratatouille, Up and Wall-E and they have the kind of emotional storytelling that I'm looking for in a film. I just wish that other studios would feel this urge to produce good stories on film.

I really hope that there will be an awakening of the audience at one point. There are more great short films out there in the web than crappy major motion pictures. How about people don't support the new Spiderman or the next horrible Michael Bay movie.

It's not just the studios that make the decision to show us all these meaningless special effects stuff. It's us who pay the money and support those kind of films by buying the merchandise, the DVD's and going to these movies.

Is the technicolor Cinestyle really more noisy than super flat?

The word out in the internet lately was that the new Cinestyle for the Canon DSLR's has problems with the high ISO range causing more noise than the old "super flat" setting. There is no doubt that the Technicolor setting has brought a lot of nice possibilities for the postproduction even though it's quite difficult to find the focus without the viewfinder or a bigger screen. There has been a lot of discussion about the problem concerning noise but is there really a difference? Andrew Schär took his 60D and made a comparison between the two styles pushing ISO from low to high (thanks Andrew!). After seeing this I really don't see a difference. Cinestyle is brighter in general and therefore the noisy might be more displayed because of the high contrast and brightness. For the original statement check below the video.

Andrew Schär:

"A little while ago, Technicolor released Cinestyle - a profile for Canon DSLR's - that aimed to give filmmakers a greater latitude in the shadows when filming.

Vincent Laforet had a post on his blog about this (q5KxOV) - you'll notice from the still images there, how the highlights are roughly the same or perhaps even slightly less bright, while the shadows are much brighter than the Flat Canon profile.

Anyway, the previous test I did focused on seeing how much noise was produced at each ISO increment, bearing in mind that Technicolor recommends using multiples of 160 for the lowest noise -23082874

However, after chatting to a friend & phenomenal filmmaker, Salomon Ligthelm (ligthelm), he shied away from the Cinestyle profile, saying that it was too noisy for his liking.

So I wondered - If I shoot the same test using the "Flat" profile, and put them side-by-side, would I see less noise?

The EXACT same contrast, brightness, and curves settings, that I used to boost the Cinestyle test, were used on the Flat profile footage. The only problem was that I couldn't see any noise! At first I thought that this meant the Cinestyle profile was in fact, much more noisy than the Flat profile. Why wouldn't I think that when the results were clearly showing no noise, vs. plenty noise?

The thing is, I could clearly see though, that the Cinestyle footage was much brighter, or at least had a different gamma to that of the Flat footage. Of course that's completely logical since we know the Cinestyle profile gives a much greater latitude in the shadows.

But what I wanted to know, was whether or not my images would be noisier if I shot using the Cinestyle profile. So I played with the brightness and contrast of the Flat footage to try and VISUALLY MATCH the brightness and contrast of the Cinestyle footage.

I found that if I increased brightness by 18.4% and contrast by 2%, I could practically replicate the Cinestyle image on the left.

After I had done this and played it back, the noise to me seemed practically identical, which lead me to conclude that the Cinestyle profile isn't CREATING more noise, it's simply DISPLAYING more noise, since shadow brightness is boosted by around 20%.

In the video you'll see the Cinestyle footage top-left, the further-boosted Flat profile on the right, and the "same-boosted-settings-as-cinestyle" Flat footage on the bottom, for comparison.

I'm guessing that if you tried to boost just the shadows of the Flat footage in post, that the real-world footage wouldn't be as clear, or would be more noisy than what the Cinestyle footage is creating in-camera, while filming.

In other words, the idea behind Cinestyle's brighter shadows is that you're going to ultimately DARKEN them a bit (along with noise) in post - according to your needs - whereas shooting with the Flat profile means you may need to BRIGHTEN the shadows in post - which logically speaking, would be worse for your image.

Whether or not this is true in everday filming, is up to the viewer and filmmaker I guess."

MI:4 inside the trailer edit

Earlier this week I posted an interview with J.J Abrams the creator of Lost, Star Trek and MI:3. Now his new movie of the MI series is coming out and it looks promising. In MI:3 we had great action combined with a more personal connection to the character Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) which made it my personal favorite of the three Mission Impossible movies.

Can the studio take it to the next level?

The studio kept J.J Abrams on board for MI:4 and chose Brad Bird (director of "The Incredibles") to direct his first live action movie. This movie is supposed to hand off the leading character played by Tom Cruise to Jeremy Renner ("The hurt locker", "28 weeks later"). This makes me a little nervous considering the last few big movies that have tried handing off main characters (e.g. "Indiana Jones"). But this trailer makes me reconsider my concerns. The editing is well done and it's one of the Top 5 trailers I've seen this year. Let's take a closer look at the trailer.

The Basics

The trailer lasts 144 seconds with aprox. 130+ shots.
Nearly half of the shots contain major action.
The average time for one shot is 0.9 seconds!
Sound by Eminem - "Won't back down"

Breaking it down

I really love editing and ever since I was little I was already getting into that certain feeling when I watched the trailers before the main feature. Hence I'm crazy about good trailers (making and watching them). I'm not a big fan of the super fast edits they do in the action movies nowadays (e.g. beginning of "Quantum of Solace") but I think the timing here is perfectly done. Obviously it's great to be able to edit with a great soundtrack and having crazy action footage like that to play with. Creating the right mix of information, emotion and action is incredibly hard and I salute to all the trailer editors who succeed in making such superb work.

The beginning of the trailer is about some background info. When you watch it online obviously you know that it's the MI:4 trailer but if you sit in the theater and you won't know what's coming next the line "Your mission, should you choose to accept it" with the revealing of Ethan Hunt is a big surprise. The viewer spends the first 30-35 seconds of the trailer not knowing who the voice is talking to. After that little introduction the trailer explodes with the Eminem song.

As an editor it's difficult to establish a shot with a beat rate like that. You only have a few frames to show the viewer what you want. To avoid to many different shots in such a short time the editor just took shots from the same scene and it just feels like you're missing out on some camera movement without loosing continuity though. The black fades help keeping it low editing action before the songs kicks in. This is going on for a while with some text flashing in and setting some locations and a mood for the movie.

At 1:10 the editor used time remapping instead of a cut to match the music and it shows you how easily this can fit in at the right time. Brilliant idea to slow it down with the music while Ethan Hunt is being thrown around in a crashing car. It goes on with more black in and out fades to match the beat.

At 1:22 the sequence ends with quite the terrific edit (again!). You can see a woman punching someone at the beat and with the impact of her fist in the other persons face it cuts right to someone smashing through a car window making it an incredible smooth edit. You have 2 heavy impacts within one cut.

Now everything is slowing down a little bit to set up for the big money shot when Tom Cruise is riding a car. The speed of the edit is accelerating while Ethan Hunt is accelerating with this sweet car. A major crash after him jumping out of the car and we see the car flipping over the main character who's lying on the ground. The sound effects here help passing a part of the lost part song. Very effective way to get it done (action and sound effects). After that they take the time to show the character of Jeremy Renner for a while because he has not had a lot of time "on air" yet. To wrap this up take it to the top! That's right. There ain't no MI without a free climb up a tall building. So to put the cherry on top they choose the tallest building in the world.

You can also check out the breakdown of the story right here.

The Dark Knight Rises Teaser

So we all have been waiting for the new Batman movie to come out and finally we get a little tease. Christopher Nolan made the last 2 batman movies "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight". Now what we see on the poster seems like a mix of the destroyed city of Leonardo DiCaprio from "Inception" (also C. Nolan) and the dark side of the new Batman movies.
Now we can see the shape of the batman symbol in the sky. But the big question is if the debris from the buildings is falling or rising as the title of the movie is suggesting. Is Batman getting his redemption helping to rebuild Gotham in a better way then before (little too much damage on the buildings though). The people of Gotham seem to be looking up and waiting for whats coming next. Let's see what Nolan does with the 3rd movie of his Batman Trilogy!

GH 2 hack is out!

Back when the GH1 was released it was still handicapped with some features like native 24/25 recording and the horrible bit rate. A hacker eventually made some major adjustments and created his own firmware with new features like higher bit rates native recording and longer record times. The Hacker, Vitaly Kiselev also known as Tester 13 branded the new name GH13 for the webcommunity.
We've enjoyed the leap Panasonic took fromt he GH1 to the GH2 but unfortunately it was missing some major filmmaking features again. A lot of GH2 users were looking forward to this day and it's finally arrived. Vitaly managed to crack the firmware once again and added the maximum recording time of 29minutes and 59 seconds. It also records in PAL/NTSC and MJPEG. However, you should be aware of the fact that installing another firmware is a danger to your camera and could result in major problems. To be on the safe side you should never install the hacked firmware. But if you do chose to do so, you will have many nice features added to your GH2 and a real 5D Mark II competitor on your hands.

This is where you can download the firmware by Vitaly
